What is Blue Light?

Blue Light is a color in the ‘visible light spectrum’ that can be seen by the human eye. Blue light has a very short wavelength, between 380 nanometers (nm) and 500 nm, and so produces a higher amount of energy.

Blue light between 415 nm and 455 nm is harmful for the eyes. However, it is well documented that some blue light exposure is essential for good health. Research has shown that high-energy visible light boosts alertness, helps memory and cognitive function and elevates mood.

Where is Blue Light found?

Blue light is actually everywhere. When outside, light from the sun travels through the atmosphere. The shorter, high-energy blue wavelengths collide with the air molecules causing blue light to scatter everywhere. This is what makes the sky look blue. In its natural form, your body uses blue light from the sun to regulate your natural sleep and wake cycles. This is known as your circadian rhythm.

Artificial sources of blue light include electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets and computers, as well as energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs and LED lights.

In recent times, COVID – 19 has resulted in increased use of digital devices and screen time for work, study and leisure activities like e-gaming. Children are especially susceptible to the harmful blue light exposure, as the school classes are now being imparted via video conferencing (e-learning).
